We explored how lactoferrin might alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by examining its effects on stress-induced colitis in Wistar rats. In our study, we used a chronic wrap-restraint stress model to simulate the psychological stress that contributes to IBS.
The rats were divided into four groups: naïve rats, those subjected to stress, and two groups that received either vitamin D or lactoferrin. Our findings indicated that both lactoferrin and vitamin D improved various health markers compared to the stressed rats. Notably, lactoferrin treatment resulted in enhanced social behavior, increased levels of beneficial interleukin-10, and improved autophagy in the colon.
Furthermore, lactoferrin demonstrated a remarkable ability to decrease inflammatory markers and stress levels, suggesting it may modulate the body’s response to the inflammation linked with IBS.
